Dimitri's Tapas Bar and Taverna Restaurant In Manchester

your comments review this restaurant

Why does anyone go to Dimitri's? The food is at BEST average, and in reality probably a bit below average. The prices are very, very high for food this insipid, and you'll end up spending almost as much as you would for a fine dining experience, all for bland and pretty much boring kebab shop food. Combine that with service that is brusque and certainly not friendly and there is simply no reason to go. Try Topkapi, which is a couple of minutes up Deansgate, and has much better versions of the same dishes, at lower prices, and with very good service.

I have just had a bad experience here. The manager bawled me out in public because I asked for a High Chair that we had been promised on booking but none was available when we arrived. We ended up passing the 6month baby round the table and eating one handed. The manager shouted and almost asked me to leave, told me I was a trouble maker and he didn't want custom like that. He then appeared to calm himself down and apologised for the lack of a chair but not for his behaviour. I only stayed because of the children in the party being hungry.

I checked on TripAdvisor.com later and found I was by no means alone in this experience of the volatile manager! I wrote to the owner who replied that he couldn't understand why I was upset over someone getting angry with me!

The rest of the staff were polite and helpful.

If you visit this place, keep your head down and don't complain or ask for anything unusual and you might enjoy the reasonably decent Greek food.

I didn't come here with the intention of writing a review, but after reading some of the others, are we really talking about the same place? OK the service isn't exactly 'doting', but I've been here a number of times, and quite frankly I think it's quite wonderful. The prices are quite steep but then the portions are quite massive. Maybe it isn't the best place to come for tapas, but for ambience, atmosphere, and big tasty often quite healthy meals I would highly recommend it!

And just on the off chance, I don't know if I'm allowed to write this here, but does anyone know about the 'dinner on a barge' business that is supposedly hidden somewhere around castlefield?

After reading the previous review I decided to write down my experience of this hideous restaurant.

We had booked a table a month in advance for my friends birthday, there were 12 of us in total. We had numerous conversations over the telephone with staff at Dimitri's due to changes in table numbers. We arrived at the restaurant half an hour before the table was booked so we could have a drink and relax before our meal. Like the other person that has written a review Dimitri's was also recommended to us, so we were very much looking forward to our meal.

When we all got settled on the table, there were no menus on the table to we got some of other free tables. During doing this a waitress asks what we are doing so we explain, to which she tells us we are having the party menu. This was news to us as it had NEVER been mentioned. She says this is general procedure for tables over 9 people and again we stress this was never made clear to us. She backs down and told us its ok we can have the normal menu tonight but to be aware of it for next time.

So we sit down again and think about what to order, about five minutes later, the manager apears (Probably the same person the previous people are talking about). He starts shouting and pointing in our faces telling us to either pay £21 per head for the party menu or leave. We were obviously not told about this, as being students we cannot afford this and if we were told about this party menu we would not have gone here. This argument went on for a good ten minutes with him screaming in our faces. The night resulted in us having to leave and a terrible atmosphere.

It was the worst case of customer service I have ever seen and cannot believe the nerve of this man, DO NOT GO HERE!

This restuarant is possibly the worst I have ever been to. I cannot give a score on the food, as we never got to that point.

My partner and I wanted to have an enjoyable, relaxing Christmas dinner, and Dmitri's had come recommended by work colleagues.

We pre-booked a table for 8pm three weeks in advance. When we arrived, at 7.50, we were shepherded into the bar area, which from the outside looks good, but from inside is really shabby. The bar service is slow and poor, the music is distant and the atmosphere is decidedly average.

HALF AN HOUR LATER, it is 8.20. My partner and I have been stood waiting for our pre-booked table, yet at least five couples have wandered in off the street and been given tables. I think I am within my right to ask what is going on. When I do ask the general manager, he responds with shouting and gesticulation and tells us to clear off, refusing to serve us. I found this the most appalling customer service I have ever come across and the people in the bar agreed. Even the barmaid cringed.

Needless to say I was happy to leave and find somewhere better. We did. But this level of service was so poor that people need to know about it. NEVER, EVER, Go to Dmitri's.

I wanted to like this place. It LOOKS like the sort of place that would be great. Sadly, looks and reality do now always coincide.

The service is sometimes brusk, sometimes simply sloppy. The food is about a 5 out of ten. Not good. Not bad.

But it's expensive. For the money you'll spend in here for a dinner for two you could go to dozens of high-end restaurants in Manchester that have much better food.

If you want this type of food, go to Topkapi, about 5 minutes away. Even Topkapi is only "pretty good", but at least you don't leave thinking your pocket has been picked, and the food is definitely better than Dimitri's.

Unfriendly staff, food was OK, quite good but nothing special. Surroundings were good, but spoilt when for some reason our waitress gave our table (that we had booked days in advance) to another customer! Then with no explanation or apology plonked us next to the door. Felt really unwelcome. Won't bother going again.
