Yang Sing

Today my Husband and I dined at the Little Yang Sing. The meal and service were excellent as usual, but we did find the staff too keen to help which made me feel a little uncomfortable. We know that theymeant well but a little more 'in the background' would have helped.
We paid our bill by credit card and 10% was automatically added which we were happy about, but we were told that the 10% would be only shared by full time employees and to consider also the part timers in a separate tip. My husband thought that this was a bit cheeky.
I hope you don't mind me mentioning this but we have never come across this situation at your restaurant before and as I said we have always had lovely food and service.

We have visited Yang Sing about twice a year for the last twelve years. We have seen the transfer from the temporary premises after the fire back to the refurbished building and, for many years after the return to its original site, one knew that one might well have to queue to get a table and that the main room downstairs would be heaving with people, a significant proportion of whom would be ethnic Chinese. The dim sum would come promptly, piping hot, and the service would be bustling, attentive and very quick.
We returned for lunch today, a Saturday in August, at the express wish of younger son, a confirmed Yang Sing fan since he first tackled its dim sum by skewering the food through the middle with his chopsticks; he is now rather more adept and wished to celebrate his birthday and demonstrate his now dual chopstick dexterity.
What a disaster it was! Ghastly new decor - WAGtastic or should it be chavtastic, with trendy plates and horrendous heavy black plastic chopsticks with a tasteless silver crown to emphasise their inappropriateness.Much harder to use. The lower floor was only 20% full and the fellow punters, like ourselves, were definitely not ethnic Chinese. The food was average, laced with MSG, came in dribs and drabs and was from a different planet to the Yang Sing of even the recent past. We asked one of the staff what on earth was going on and she looked and sounded embarrassed as she agreed that there had been some "changes".
What on earth can have prompted its owners, so often feted for producing some of the most authentic Cantonese cuisine in the UK, to commit the culinary equivalent of voluntary euthanasia with today's Yang Sing? A tax loss as in Mel Brooks' "The Producers"? Tax exile and an unfortunate choice of manager?A family feud? A major shareholding in a MSG manufacturer?Senile dementia? Is Wayne Rooney now the interior designer? Oh well........in the end who really cares? We will move on and try to find another dim sum dive, ideally packed with local punters and brim full of life and a genuine love for what it does. As the Neapolitans say, "Che Pizza!"; this translates as " What a balls up!" Ciao Yang Sing.

We have just had the worst Chinese meal of our lives at the Yang Sing, Manchester.Tasteless food, even the prawn crackers were awful. The staff were helpful, but the food was terrible. We left most of it on the table. How long can they carry on like this.

We ate at the Yang Sing last night and I'm afraid we were hugely disappointed. We started with some dim sum which were OK, although the veggie spring rolls were rather bland.
We then had the duck in lemon and honey sause and the satay beef. Neither had any taste at all- in fact the beef appeared to be served in something similar to bisto gravy. They are possibly the blandest two Chinese dishes I have ever eaten.
Afterwards both of us were very thirsty suggesting an excess of salt- something I have seen written elsewhere.
The service was fine- although they brought boiled rather than the fried rice we had ordered.
Having travelled in China quite a lot, I can say it's not authentically Chinese, but then many UK Chinese restaurants aren't and they still deliver decent food.
It's difficult to believe that this is the best Chinese restaurant in the street let alone the UK! Certainly China Red in Stockton Heath and Man Zen in Knutsford are several divisions higher in quality.

Celebrated Valentine's Day here.. BIG mistake!! Awful service, felt truly neglected.. Courses missing from order and no apology..BAD. Tables wiped and being stacked away indiscreetly as we ate the waitress then presented the bill to us and..wait for it.. asked "would you like to leave me a tip???" WHAT? We then watched with amazement as we saw her being asked by the manager whether we had tipped!! This place has not tact or passion for food or service..don't go, please!

Well..where do I begin? Having thought it was going to be a great idea, celebrating St. Valentines Day at Yang Sing, I quickly found I'd made a mistake. I had visited some 5 or 6 years ago and really, really enjoyed the experience so decided to take my boyfriend. The table was presented to us by a member of staff pointing over to the said seats, no drinks order taken, just menus. We opted for the set menu. The waiter literally hovered by the table and took my partners plate while he still had food in his mouth (nice touch) and quickly brought over the next course which was again, not especially great, not bad, just not great considering their reputation.. Anyway, they then asked "would you like the bill?" I said that we would not as we hadn't had our main course!! We then ate our main while tables were wiped with Cilit Bang and dismantled..cutlery clattering around our ears...clearly setting up for tomorrows customers! We left without being offered the deserts and coffees promised to us on the set menu. A load of rubbish! Only interested in bums on seats..poor quality of service, unpleasant staff, so-so food.. Glad I didn't chose this night to propose!!

It's been a couple of years since I dined at Yang Sing and in the previous few years I have dined there perhaps a dozen times. Dropped by in the afternoon of 31st Dec 06 and it was dreadful, although there was lots of empty tables the table cloth was tatty, service was slow and indifferent to the point of irritation and atmosphere was cold and flat, Dim sum was average and overall the experience was very disapointing. Last time the four of us dined at sunday lunchtime the bill was £120 and well worth it, this time we left at £50 and I felt robbed. To cap it all my wife tells me that the loos were filthy......no excuses, even if it was New Years Eve. Dining at Yang Sing was always a safe bet - not sure I'd 'treat' my guests the same way again

Used to go here a lot, particularly for Dim Sum on a Sunday but never again. The tastes have gone down, too much msg and poor value for money. Last time I went, I didn't see a single table of Chinese customers and it used to be heaving.

Ate at the Yang Sing on Saturday night with five others. We had the £29 banquet and didn't seem to get much food for the money. I asked for crispy duck and the waiter treated me like I was stupid because they don't serve it anymore. I can't undestand this, its probably the most popular dish and even my local takeaway does it! The food they do serve was lovely and the service was efficient but the staff made us feel almost like we were putting them out by eating there. Not a warm and relaxing experience. It was all very rushed. Cliff Richard was in late on Saturday night too after his concert at the MEN. I bet they were a little more welcoming to him, although they did sit him downstairs!
