i went into the Yang Sing restaurant this weekend and was absolutely disgraced by the poor service, standard of food and price. had the food been nice, i would not mind paying the price. i love to try out new places, i spend a lot of money on dining but the whole experience was nauseating!!

none of the waiters could communicate properly, not even able to advise on allergy cautions. when the food finally arrived (which took much too long) it tasted stale and cold.

it appalls me that Yang Sing has received so much praise and hype for being "the best" yet quite clearly (just looking at the reviews on this site) it is all just publicity. money well spent by owners harry and gerry yeung! i also hear they have received OBE/MBE status.. for what exactly??

their behaviour disgraces the community and creates such a poor image for other legitimate chinese business. it ruins the image of both english and chinese society; overpowered by deceit and corruption.

lets put it this way, i won't ever be going back there again and if there was any justice in this world, bad publicity should shower the Yang Sing restaurant to warn off other victims like myself.

I visited Yang Sing 10th May 2008 with family. I'd heard so much about this famous Chinese restaurant that I couldn't wait to see it for myself.

The food was appalling, I had steamed prawns with a soya dip. The prawns came and looked severely distressed. One of our part had duck which was totally inedible. My wife had sizzling beef and left most of it. Our local Chinese in Bangor is ten times as good.

The staff were unhelpful and when we complained at the end of the meal and asked to speak to the manager, the waitier scurried off never to be seen again. We paid £144 for a party of five and this was one of the worst meals of my life.

On the Yang Sing web site they cite a range of good reviews and awards none of which are in the last 3 years. I think management have definitely taken their eye of the ball. Don't go there you have been warned.

Take heed of the warning reviews they are inaccurate.......it's a damn site worse!

Get a take-away nearer home and leave the Yang Sing to the poor folk who like me were taken in by years of hype. If you do go order the egg fried rice and save some to send to the trades description people!!

For a laugh take a look at the prices on the wine list. For another order the Peking Spare ribs coated in a Bisto taste alike flavoured with a few chinese spices.

Dont fall for the "casserole" description it insults the word.

As the previous reviewer says the are many better Chinese Restaurants not far away....I'm keeping my usual restaurant to myself and leaving the Yang Sing to those who dont know or any better......we are all allowed one mistake.......never again.

At half the price it would be about ok. The food is fine....just about what you'd find in your average Chinese place in any small town. 'Britain's best Chinese?? Don't make me laugh. The Kwok Main (sp?) next door is better, and Fu's nearby is LIGHT YEARS ahead at 1/2 the price.

But the atmosphere is first rate, and I guess for corporate entertainment that is more important than the actual food. But for you and me it is REALLY a stupid move to go to Yang Sing when there are place within a two minute walk that are much better. Pacific, Hong Kong, Fu's.......all WELL better, and less expensive.

I've never once seen a Chinese person eating at Yang Sing. What more do you need to know?

I visited the Yang Sing for the first time on Valentines Day. I was looking forward to eating in Manchester's famous restaurant, a true Champion, I was so disappointed. I have eaten Chinese food of the same quality at my local Ember Inn's. I think the food had been prepared by the world renowned chef… Ken Wood.

When friends had talked about their visit to this restaurant a few years ago for a 21st birthday party or works dinner they talked of great food, great service and with great enthusiasm. Not sure what has happened at the Yang Sing but I liken it to a great boxer who has carried on fighting long after they should have retired, punch drunk and relying on their early reputation to draw the paying customers. You watch out of morbid curiosity wondering how much longer he can last before the younger, stronger and hungrier opponent will deliver the final knockout blow. For the Yang Sing it cannot come soon enough.

The restaurant was not at capacity yet we sat for over 30 minutes before we eventually got someone to take our order. We opted for set menu A. You can change it to suit your own tastes from the vast selection of Dim Sums – challenge us the menu quotes. We tried and the waitress was not interested. As she left the table I honestly didn't know what we were going to be served. You were made to feel it was a chore.

The food was eventually served and we had to return the first dishes because of the unwanted addition of hair. The rest of the dishes were OK but when you spend nearly £100 on a meal for two you expect more than OK, or less when it comes to the hair. When you pay your bill the waiter asked if we would leave a tip. I am ashamed to say for the first time I left nothing.

We left feeling very disappointed and as though I’d been caught by a sneaky right hook. The winner by TKO, the Yang Sing.

So if you want to enjoy an authentic meal that represents true value for money I would recommend you go elsewhere because just like all boxers, they still pack a punch and just like me, you might just get sucker punched by this overweight, overpaid and out of shape ex-champion.

When i visited the restaurant i was very impressed with the service and the atmosphere. There was prompt service and the food was excellent . I would definately visit the restaurant again and would recommend it to anyone. I felt asthough i was back in Hong Kong.

The only drawback was that the lighting was a bit dim and the menus were hard to read.

I had to complain about the terrible service we received at this restaurant.

We were a party of four and had booked our table for 6-30pm.On arrival we were left standing at the reception/bar area for 5 mins before anyone acknowledged us.

Several minutes later we were shown to a shabby table that was not set for dinner despite there being a number of tables that were freely available, that were set.

We were given menus and waited for 10 mins and no-one had been over to even take a drink order from us. Other tables who arrived later than us had been given drinks and had their orders taken.

This was too much for us so we left.

Needless to say, this is not acceptable, and its certainly not what one would expect from supposedly the premiere chinese restaurant in the area.

I find this hard to understand as this restaurant came recommended from a number of business people we know in and around Manchester.

Rest assured we wont be recommending it to anyone.

Today my Husband and I dined at the Little Yang Sing. The meal and service were excellent as usual, but we did find the staff too keen to help which made me feel a little uncomfortable. We know that theymeant well but a little more 'in the background' would have helped.

We paid our bill by credit card and 10% was automatically added which we were happy about, but we were told that the 10% would be only shared by full time employees and to consider also the part timers in a separate tip. My husband thought that this was a bit cheeky.

I hope you don't mind me mentioning this but we have never come across this situation at your restaurant before and as I said we have always had lovely food and service.

We have visited Yang Sing about twice a year for the last twelve years. We have seen the transfer from the temporary premises after the fire back to the refurbished building and, for many years after the return to its original site, one knew that one might well have to queue to get a table and that the main room downstairs would be heaving with people, a significant proportion of whom would be ethnic Chinese. The dim sum would come promptly, piping hot, and the service would be bustling, attentive and very quick.

We returned for lunch today, a Saturday in August, at the express wish of younger son, a confirmed Yang Sing fan since he first tackled its dim sum by skewering the food through the middle with his chopsticks; he is now rather more adept and wished to celebrate his birthday and demonstrate his now dual chopstick dexterity.

What a disaster it was! Ghastly new decor - WAGtastic or should it be chavtastic, with trendy plates and horrendous heavy black plastic chopsticks with a tasteless silver crown to emphasise their inappropriateness.Much harder to use. The lower floor was only 20% full and the fellow punters, like ourselves, were definitely not ethnic Chinese. The food was average, laced with MSG, came in dribs and drabs and was from a different planet to the Yang Sing of even the recent past. We asked one of the staff what on earth was going on and she looked and sounded embarrassed as she agreed that there had been some "changes".

What on earth can have prompted its owners, so often feted for producing some of the most authentic Cantonese cuisine in the UK, to commit the culinary equivalent of voluntary euthanasia with today's Yang Sing? A tax loss as in Mel Brooks' "The Producers"? Tax exile and an unfortunate choice of manager?A family feud? A major shareholding in a MSG manufacturer?Senile dementia? Is Wayne Rooney now the interior designer? Oh well........in the end who really cares? We will move on and try to find another dim sum dive, ideally packed with local punters and brim full of life and a genuine love for what it does. As the Neapolitans say, "Che Pizza!"; this translates as " What a balls up!" Ciao Yang Sing.

We have just had the worst Chinese meal of our lives at the Yang Sing, Manchester.Tasteless food, even the prawn crackers were awful. The staff were helpful, but the food was terrible. We left most of it on the table. How long can they carry on like this.
