I have no idea why this place has such a good reputation. Despite the place being more than half empty the service was slow, surly and slapdash, and my main meal, when it eventually arrived, consisted entirely of tinned chickpeas stirred into a can of Patak's pickle accompanied by undercooked rice.

went to the restaurant a couple of weeks ago and as ive come to expect from the great kathmandu the food was excellent the service was ok not as bad as some of the other reviews suggest (however maybe ive only been on quiet nights - not sure?)The decor is a bit shabby and tables are often too close together. In all i strongly reccommend it, in fact i am goin back this week

I've been going to the Great Kathmandu for 20 years and the food and service have never been other than excellent. Has Bary been rubbing the staff up the wrong way?

We always enjoy the excellent food and hospitality of the Great Kathmandu. Our last visit was on 29 March. The Great Kathmandu is an exceptional establishment and - although immensely popular, frequently booked-out, and offering a broad menu - still takes pains to cook to individual tastes. Their Makhan Chara is a house specialty and delicious, but we lean to their subtle Sag (spinach plus meats, chicken, or fish) and vegetarian mixture dishes. Their nan and chapati breads are always fresh and warm, their tandooris fragrant and never too dry. Their list of Nepalese and Indian beers is ample, and their beers – as their fruit juices - are satisfyingly cold and served without delay.

We found found the waiters, although invariably busy, friendly and extremely courteous. The dining experience is always a pleasure at the Great Kathmandu, and we feel very fortunate to have such a highly-rated restaurant (Observer Award for best UK Indian food) on our doorstep. It is a rare gem.

I have been to the restaurant lots of times and the food is always so good that I think about going back the next day and the next day - in fact the whole week could be great kathmandu week. With the new extension the place now accomodates for over 150 covers. I find even if I have to wait for a while for my table the food ,more than, compensates for it. This stretch of restaurants on Burton Rd are proving very popular as the Metropolitan makes this into a good worthy night out.

I agree with the last reviewer.

The food was quite good, when we eventually got it 2 hours after we arrived at our booked table.

Service is truly terrible, I don't think they are malicious just really incompetent.

They pack way too many people into the place and don't have enough trained staff to serve them or a big enough kitchen to feed them.

It was especially annoying that they couldn't deliver the beers while we were waiting unless we asked 3 times.

Food - very good

service - awful

That pretty much sums it up. I've been there a few time and it's been the same. I occasionally venture back just to check if the staff are still just as rude.
