I have to disagree with all the impressed people out there on this restaurant. my daughter and i went there saterday afternoon for lunch, it looks like and feels like a cafe with the desserts scribbled on blackboards hanging off the walls, we had steak and chips which was tiny, frozen fries and no side with a runny thin sauce, not even a bit of garnish.....the chefs had dirty uniforms on. the food took ages to come and then they charged me 10% for the service.l NEVER AGAIN FOR ME!!!!

Very pleased to find this restaurant. Excellent food - Rump of lamb, mediterranean fish stew, and salt and pepper squid were highlights. Fabulous desserts, in particular a chocolate and Bailey's torte with amazingly crisp, sweet pastry.
Wine list was varied, although we stuck to the viognier. Also, there was a toddler in our group, and she was made to feel very welcome indeed by the lovely staff. I will definitely return, and am keen to sample the prix fixe menus as well.

Following a delightful afternoon in the Northern Quarter, we happened upon The Northern Quarter restaurant and its offer of £9.95 for 2 courses. What excellent value for money, the offer is open until 7pm and so for early starters offers superb value.
The choice was a selection from the a la carte menu, slightly restricted but still very good choice. The highlight was the poached eggs on the starter, they were done to perfection mine with black pudding, my good ladys as the star attraction in an eggs florentine!
My main course was fish and chips posh style, with the fish superb with a home made tartar sauce. The meatballs had by the good lady were excellent as well.
All in all, 2 great meals with a bottle of my favourite Malbec for £40.
Try it!

One of those places I always wanted to try and finally got round to it. A great individual venue- no to see an independent in Manchester when theres so many chains. Was a good night out, a little pricey but good. I liked it!

Had dinner here with 5 friends on Friday. It was the first time we'd been this year and we all were blown away by how good it was. I had the prawns to start followed by the special of a shoulder of lamb which I was told will feature on their new menu starting soon. It was absolutely delicious. Everybody enjoyed the experience; food, wine and service all excellent. Highly recomended!! 10 out of 10!!

This used to be my favourite restaurant in Manchester but 4 of us went last night and I was so disappointed I probably won't go again. The starters were fairly uninspiring (liver parfait, prawn cocktail, beef carpaccio) and the portions were tiny. My main of roast rack of pork was slightly overcooked so it was a bit dry - particularly since I only had about half a teaspoon of red wine jus with it. One of us had the salmon which was apparently really nice but again, the portions were tiny. My pork dish was more fat than meat. There was a nice selection of desserts but our waitress had to read these out to us as they weren't written down anywhere. I appreciate that they change regularly but it would be easy to write them up on a specials board. We literally had to sit there trying to remember what the waitress had said which is just plain silly.
The main problem though was the extremely slow service. We waited 40 minutes for our starters and the mains took a long time to arrive also. There is also a problem with the fact that the door opens straight onto the dining area. Every time someone comes in or out you get a blast of cold air. My mum ended up keeping her coat on between courses.
Given that this restaurant is reasonably pricy, they should really start paying a bit more attention to detail. We had decided not to leave a 10% tip because of the long waiting time but irritatingly, the service charge had already been added to the bill and no one wanted the embarrassment of asking for it to be removed. It's a real shame that this restaurant seems to have gone so far down hill.

Had a Saturday night meal for four. Food was good but way overpriced, especialy in terms of the portions. The starters were small. My beef carpaccio with rocket salad was only a few mouthfuls, consumed within 2 minutes and at £6.25 was extortionate. My wife and friends were equallly unimpressed. The main courses were also mean, but tasty. The wine was Ok. The Sauvignon Blanc and Prosecco were good quality but certainly not cheap. We ate early, about 7.15 so service was fast and efficient. We were pressured to spend more on wine but we resisted the charms of the staff. Overall, quite nice ambience and attentive service, but this place needs to look to its laurels if it is to compete with other restaurants in a similar class.

My partner and I ate here a Saturday night in June '08 at 21.00. We had a couple of glasses of the Prosecco to start with - very nice.
For starters we had the sea trout and the carpaccio - both of which were excellent (I personally preferred the sea trout). For mains we had the beef and the halibut - again both excellent - with sides of a tomato and red onion salad. For dessert I had the Eton mess - again excellent, along with 2 glasses of the dessert wine (they didn't have our first choice however......).
With a bottle of Viognier - the bill came to just over a 100 pounds including 10% service. Excellent. Would recommend and certainly go back. Service was very good. The only 'negative' was that the restaurant was quite noisy, but a certain plus point is that they open very late - and the Northern Quarter is certainly the place to be

Unfortunately I cannot agree with the glowing reviews by some. I ate here on Saturday night with two friends but was bitterly disappointed. The food was good but not exceptional. The waiter was very blatantly and crudely pushing for us to consume a second bottle of wine and we waited at least 40 minutes for our food. Most irritating was the way three members of staff in three minutes hovered like vultures waiting to take our money so they could clear us out and get the next customers in. Big disappointment.
