Koh Samui Thai Restaurant

The food is ok....but no better than that. And it's VERY expensive. Why you would eat here when the world class Chaopraya is nearby is a mystery. I'd not even rank it the second best in Manchester, to be honest.
I did find the service quick and helpful...but at the end of the day it's all about the food, and when you're charging top whack, you need to send out top level cooking. They don't.

My wife and I live in kent and the garlic duck here is good enough for us to travel up to eat it. By the time you add up transport costs and a night at the palace or the midland hotel it is probably the most expensive duck ever. But we are frequent visiters to thailand( actually got married in bangkok) and we still maintain that the duck here is the best in the uk.The only problem here is the vast popularity of the place. Our last visit was on january 13th 2007 and in spite of booking a table we left after 40 minutes as it was our wedding anniversary and we could not hold off the hunger pangs any more.

The Koh Samui was recommended to us by, of all people, a Big Issue seller! I'd have liked to have found him again afterwards to thank him as our experience of the Koh Samui was very good. So much so that we have returned many times since.
BUT .... As an Aussie who is used to BYO I would eat out much more often if the price of wine was more reasonable. We enjoy wine with a meal but resent paying £15 for a bottle that costs £4 in Tesco. This is not a critisism of just the Koh Samui but of restaurants in general.
Also, if you are a non-smoker you might sometimes find the atmosphere in the Koh Samui quite objectionable (Aussie restaurants have already banned smoking). So when we discovered that the Chilli Banana Thai restaurant in Wilmslow was non-smoking we headed down there. Even better food in a smoke-free environment; Bliss!
When in Manchester we shall no doubt return to the Koh Samui, but not until after July 1st 2007.

This restaurant is obvously lots of different things to different people, our experience was different to the ones below, our service was extremely quick and efficient, however the menu was very bizarre, it was like asking for the english menu when you are abroad, the descriptions gave no idea at all of the ingredients, and offered no Thai names for anything apart from about three rice dishes. It was absolutely packed and everyone around us was talking about what they had last time etc, so it obviously has a very loyal following, however it seems to have been anglicised to an extreme, we had a banquet which gave us a broad collection of dishes to be able to comment, there were none of the delicate tastes, aromas, fine ingredients I have found with good thai in the past. tables for two people were far too close together and made us feel quite uncomfortable.

The food was OK but the service was the worst I've experienced in a restaurant. We had to re-order one of our starters twice before in finally came. Almost two hours after being seated our main course arrived only for one of the orders to be wrong. We also ordered a round a drinks that never appeared. I certainly wouldn't go again.

You guys must all be mad!
Being from London and having used london-eating.com for new options every now and again, I decided that on my first trip to Manchester to refer to a place recommended via this site. I was amazed with the high ratings and positive reviews about this place. Went and tried it - basically was very dissapointed.
Yes the service was very good, and the atmosphere was very nice. But the main thing you go for is the food, and it was nonsense! I've eaten alot of thai food, and of the 3 dishes I tried I hated all of them. I dont know if people in Manchester just have lower standards or what but please! gimme a break... you people cannot be rating such places in the 8-9s get out a bit more.

We and many others suffered a unacceptable delay to be seated at the Koh Samui. It appears that they overbooked numbers and a large queue formed at 8.30 - all with bookings. We were seated within 30 minutes only after some very serious complaining, another couple we left standing for around an hour and then got the wrong food delivered - they were not very happy! I think we will think carefully about going again despite the good food.

We have just been to Manchester with our new bus passes and wandered pass the Samui. Having eaten Thai in Bankok, Malaysia and Australia we have been a little spoilt, however the lunchtime special was the best food and best value ever. The spicy chicken salad and chillie beef were sumptious, and the service first class. We will be back on a regular basis. Well done to you all.

This is without doubt my favourite restaurant in Manchester. I recommend it unreservedly. The food and service are first rate.
