Visited this restaurant for the first time 1 year ago and it definately wasnt to be my last ! the food is fantastic freshly coked and tasty without being over or under cooked. the vegatables were crisp and crunchy delicious and fresh . Im not a lover of sushi so i cant comment, but the other dishes ive tried have all been above and beyond anyother japanese food ive tasted. the portions are very generous. when i recieved my wonton soup i thought it was the soup dish its self . The atmosphere is calm and relaxing and goes well with the whole experience. If you appreciate well cooked food in a clean enviroment with friendly staff then this si the place to go. 10/10

Had a meal with friends and thought the food was excellent. Enjoyed the variety of choice and even tried the vegetarian sushi which was great. The staff were very helpful and friendly - would recommend giving this place a visit.

I have become a regular at umami since the restaurant started serving fresh sushi, dining 1-2 times a week. So many establishments have jumped on the sushi bandwagon but I am happy to say that this is the best I have had in Manchester. As a sushi lover I know my nigiri from my maki and you will appreciate the cuts of organic salmon and other fresh produce used in the sushi.
I tend to have a couple of small dishes and sometimes a soup noodle main to compliment and have always found these served hot and flavoursome. I find the staff attentive and I can see that extra waiting staff would benefit during busy periods.
Regarding the décor - I actually like the way the restaurant is set out. Being in a basement I understand how the walls are light in colour together with soft lighting - it works, and in my opinion brings warmth to the place and makes me feel comfortable.
In summary, the sushi is excellent, the rest of the menu is good and has a clean décor to this establishment - so far so good.

the service was terrible; the walls are bare, the waitresses were running around like headless chickens! the food was quite bland, except for the sushi, which was quite good actually. overall, you get what you paid for... cheap, bland food, plainly presented, but yes, agreed, good hangover cure!

Decor and lighting simple but cozy, the restaurant has a very good presentation in layout. Menue is easy readable and very reasonable in price. No wonder how popular it is for students .
However, service staff is a little bit lacking in professional training, so that service sometimes is far from perfect when interupted by unecessary arguing with customers.
Food is fresh made and tasty, though too little in size, and too salty and spicy, for instance no. 10 taster grilled chicken wings are very salty.

Excellent establishment - clean comfortable surroundings - efficient and polite service - great food....and now serving superb sushi! I love my sushi and I must admit this is the best I have tasted yet in Manchester. Very reasonable prices for what I believe is first rate sushi in both taste and presentation. Goodbye Yo Sushi hello umami !

We came down last night for the first time and the food was amazing. For starters we had vegetable tampura and a thai salad. The vegetable tempura was cooked to perfection (vegatables just cooked but crunchy with a light coating of crispy japanese batter). The thai salad had a wonderful dressing and tasted freshly prepared. We chose a duck soup ramen and a chilli chicken udon. The soup ramen noodles were fresh and with vegetbles that were cooked (unlike wagamama which throw the vegatables into the soup raw) and the duck was a whole duck breast boned and sliced - meat was tender and skin was crispy. I particularly liked the wooden label to slurp the soup. The udon noodles are thiner japanese ones unlike the thick ones you get at chinatown. These came with sliced chicken with vegetables in a sauce with a hint of chilli. Again the vegetales were cooked to perfection (cooked but still crunchy) and the sauce was delicious. All dishes came in ample portions which made the prices look extremly great value for money. Finished teh meal off with some fresh fruit sorbets washed down witha couple of tiger beers. This was one the best meals I have ever had and to think I have been going to the distinctively average wagamamas chain for all these years. umami cooks its food to a very high standard combining good service - it's a winner! Gutted that I have already booked a valentines meal somewhere else otherwise I would be there tonight also. Thoroughly recommended! P.S. Apparently they will be doing sushi soon so can't wait!
