That Cafe

That Cafe is one of our favourite places to eat out in Manchester. The food is very good, the service is efficient and friendly. Valentines day was no exception. There was a limited menu due to Valentines day being a busy day for them, but even with a limited menu we were spoilt for choice.
I started my meal with a Goats cheese tartlet which was perfection - It melted in your mouth and was complimented by the bed of spicy rocket leaves. David had The Mallard and Orange terrine which was a perfect blend of flavours and declared 'delicious'.
For mains I had been brave and opted for the unusual chilli beans and roasted avocado with polenta in a chocolate and chilli sauce. I was delighted at seeing such an adventurous vegetarian dish on the menu and determined to give it a go. I was disappointed to find that although the ingredients were of a high quality the flavours didn't quite work together. David chose more fortuitously with the lemon sole and mussels. It was served nice and crispy with deep fried leek on top. The flavours meshed and David declared it to be 'extremely good'.
For dessert David opted for the Plum and praline terrine - not flavours that I'd have thought of pairing together, but this time the adventurous blend worked well together resulting in a delicious dessert.
I had chosen the less adventurous meringue and forest fruits which was divine.
That Cafe isn't a cheap eat, but the food is hard to beat and for a special treat its definitely worth it.

i recently returned to that cafe after many years the last time i was the food was amazing but my last experiance was a huge dissapoitment my salmon was cooked for far too long and when my wife asked for her steak to be cooked for longer the surly female chef reclined they should bring back the old staff that can cook and bring the great food back

I went on saturday 21st July for dinner and I was so disapointed, the starter of scallops was wet, tastless & very poor value. The mains of Monkfish & prawns was scant & again tastless. The only thing that redeamed it was a pretty good bottle of Alsace wine.

Good food, in a seriously odd location. The only letdown was the very surly Scottish waiter.

That Cafe is simply a fine example of how a restaurant should be run, feel, and taste. I have been when it is busy and quiet, and on each occasion I have felt completely at home and relaxed.
Wherever possible, the food cries out 'local, organic, fresh produce', giving the dishes that earthy, rustic, yet carefully put together quality, highlighting the kitchen really knows its food.
Overall, it is one of those places that works with an ease that would make Gordon Ramsey use a string of expletives ending in ****ing brilliant!

Just enjoyed a really good Sunday Lunch with my family at That Cafe. As a vegetarian, I though the menu was much more interesting and well thought out than many restaurants, with an excellent choice of two very different dishes, as starters and mains. And for non vegetarians there was a very wide choice of meat and fish, and again dishes very imaginatively put together. The two course lunch for approx £13 is exceptional value. Service and ambience excellent, will be back!

I agree with Sylvia. That Cafe has consistently been one of the best restaurants in Manchester for the many years its been going. It's unpretentious, easy atmosphere is made by the friendly staff. The food I would class as British/Modern European using seasonal ingredients - smoked halibut parcel, fillet of beef with a peppercorn crust, chocolate cheesecake - you get the idea. Basically good food done extremely well at a decent price.
