AA Gill - 3/5

Sunday, March 20, 2011 - I had scallops on black pudding, an overfamiliar combination, and while the scallops were perfectly nicely presented, the black pudding was too timid. It was an usher rather than the groom. The addition of a tart apple sauce was a good idea. Rod had a lobster ravioli that looked like a femidom on a plate, but had a lovely delicate shellfish sweet freshness about it...I had a good bit of halibut, properly pronounced without the unnecessary H. It came with salsify and a wilted little gem, and a dab of cream and vermouth sauce, all very agreeable. Alan and Rod were both enthusiastic about the food.

Ate in The River Bar & Terrace on Saturday 2oth November after watching United play , so early evening . From the minute we walked into the Lowry Hotel we were welcomed extremely warmly by every member of staff. The food was superb and the service exemplary .. Thought a 5 star hotel maybe a little pretentious and perhaps with us being non-residents and eating "early doors" could almost have been overlooked . Not at all . Can't recommend it enough . Special mention to restaurant supervisor Marco Mancini from Naples who was so friendly and made us feel very special.

I can speak only for the Sunday lunch, which we ate with glee this week. Fantastic food, and really great value. For £19 each you get a bellini (champagne with peach juice), a starter, a main, and desert, as well as some amazingly good bread.

We both had the mini-eggs benedict starter, which was great, and made with smoked salmon instead of the customary slice of ham. For the mains we both had the roast rib of beef. It was absolutely top notch. The only complaint would be that the portion of the meat was slightly meager, but as good rib roast is very expensive, I guess you can't really complain for what you are paying. and with all the veg, potatoes, etc, there was enough meat to satisfy.

Very good deserts, and a free meal for our infant (nice surprise when the bill came).

The service was as good as it could possibly get....friendly, professional and responsive. On the way out every single person we came upon wished us a friendly goodbye.

Surely THE place to go for Sunday lunch in Manchester.
